Packers a little short, Renfrew wins series
Renfrew, ON (Feb. 28, 2010) - It was a battle to take back home advantage versus winning a playoff series on home ice. On Sunday, the Timberwolves squeezed out a 7-6 win over the Packers to claim the first round of the EOJHL Valley Division playoffs 4-2 at home.
The Packers went up 2-0 in the first two minutes of the opening period with goals from Peter Sweeney (Matt Grandinetti) and Taylor Collins (Steve Frost). The Timberwolves shot back with two of their own in a two minute span from Scott Forgie (unassisted) and Nathan Siydock (Matt Johnston, Matt Rosebrook). At 8:50 of the first, Michael Deslaurier and Steven Powell found the back of the net behind Josh Cooper with unassisted goals in just over two minutes. Drake Clancy (Adam Cybulski) brought the Packers to within one before the end of the period.
In the second Frost (Sweeney) tied up the game two minutes in but Siydock (Ryan Lepine) responded for the Timberwolves on the power-play at 4:34. Half way through the period Clancy (Cameron Stewart, Danby Suckow), with his second of the night, tied the game again. With two minutes left in the period Rosebrook scored the fourth unassisted Renfrew goal to put the home team up 6-5.
The Packers Frost (Joel Bush, Suckow) tied up the game again one minute into the third period. Then at 11:51 of the final frame Jordan Welk (Rosebrook, Tyler Charbonneau) scored the winner to give the Timberwolves a 7-6 victory.
Renfrew outshot the Packers 42-41. Renfrew was one for three on the power play while Arnprior was 0-2. Renfrew now plays the Perth Blue Wings in the finals starting Friday.
