The Ottawa Valley is hockey country and the Arnprior Junior Packers have been an important factor in the sport's development in Eastern Ontario. The oldest team in the Valley Division of the Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League, the Packers have provided an opportunity for up and coming players to showcase their skills and for the community to experience junior hockey in the town of 7,000.
Arnprior was always a hockey town with players putting on the skates in the winter and heading to the baseball diamond in the summer. Before the Arnprior Jr. B Packers the town had the Arnprior Flyers, the Arnprior Red Shirts, Arnprior Greenshirts, Arnprior All-Stars, the Arnprior RCAF, the Arnprior Rams and the Arnprior Jr. Greenshirts.
The Arnprior Jr. B Packers hockey team was formed in 1953 when Reids, Smiths and Kenwood contributed $1.000 each to buy equipment for the team and make it a reality. The name "Packers" originated from seven companies in the Town of Arnprior - Pfizer, Arnprior (Town of), Canadian Public Booth, Kenwood, Emergency Measures Organization, Reids and Smiths. The Jr. B Packers played in the old Arnprior arena on Elgin Street where games would be played before as many as 2,000 fans. The facility was torn down in 1978.
Bruce Armsden, who celebrated 50 years with the team in 2007, remembers the past when the Packers played the Hull Volants, Buckingham, Renfrew Lions and the Ottawa 67 Bees, and there were no teams in the league from Perth, Carleton Place and Shawville. The early players were 16-20 years old and came from Arnprior and towns like Quyon and Shawville.
With the demise of the Arnprior arena, the team started playing their games in Arena A (now the Bert Hall arena) at the Nick Smith Centre at the end of James St. The name was revised to Arnprior Junior Packers in 2009 to reflect the league name change to Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League.
The Arnprior Junior Packers hockey club is a community run not-for-profit organization made up of dedicated volunteers with a love for hockey and supported by the community at the gate, special fundraising and corporate sponsorships.
